Last 14 August 2020, the DOST – Philippine Council for Health Research and Development conducted this year’s online 3-Minute Pitch to Policymakers Competition for Health Research in the Philippines. Since its first launch, this is the first time that the competition was held online to ensure safety protocols amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Facilitated by Dr. Harvy Joy Liwanag from the Department of Health – Health Human Resource Development Bureau (DOH –HHRDB), the event was judged by an esteemed panel, Dr. Cecilia Cristina Santos-Acuin of the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS), Dr. Eva Maria C. Cutiongco-Dela Paz of UP Manila – National Institute of Health (UPM – NIH), Ms. Arlene S. Ruiz of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Dr. Gloria Nenita V. Velasco of the Department of Health – Health Policy Development and Planning Bureau (DOH – HPDBP), and Dr. Peter P. San Diego of the Management Information Systems Division of Philippine Heart Center.
Upon rigorous evaluation, 11 policy pitch competitors from regional health research and development consortia nationwide were chosen to be the final presenters in the event. One of the entries came from Caraga Region, represented by Ms. Gemma Chato, Medical technologist of Caraga Regional Hospital. Ms. Chato presented her proposed awareness program on Hemostatic Parameters among Smoker Patients of Caraga Regional Hospal, Surigao City. All the competitors also completed the previously conducted webinar workshop entitled, “Introduction to Evidence-Informed Policymaking for Health” which gave them enough resources to properly outline and present their pitch in the competition.
With thorough deliberation the judges declared the winners based on comprehension, communication style, and engagement. Third place was given to Mr. Michael G. Bacus of Region XI for his pitch presentation, “Healthy Nature for Healthy People”. Second place winner is the pitch title, “Bridging the Gap for the Improvement of Access to Healthcare of the Filipino Deaf Community” by Dr. Hazel Anne L. Catublas of National Capital Region (NCR), while the 1st place winner is the pitch title, “Project DiabeETH: An Approach to Improve Self-Care Management of Diabetes” by Ms. Geraldine S. Ridad of Region X. People’s Choice Award was also given to Dr. Ronnel dela Rosa of Region III with his pitch title, “Smoke-Free City Living and Tobacco-Free Generation in the City of Balanga” who garnered 28.4% of online audience votes during the event.
