CHRDC ERC pushes for accreditation

The current chair of the Ethics Review Committee (ERC) of the Caraga Health Research and Development Consortium (CHRDC) Dr. Terence Anthony S. Vesagas on Thursday, March 8 assured Dr. Cecilia Tomas and Dr. Leslie Dalmacio, resource speakers of the workshop on Standard Operating Procedures that the committee will exert more effort to gain accreditation this year.

“It’s better late than never”, Vesagas said.

Vesagas explained that they’ve been trying very hard to come up and complete the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) Manual, one of the requirements for ERC accreditation. However, due to some issues such as the turn-over and shifting of members from one committee to another and even the changing of DOST secretariat hindered potential accreditation.

He also revealed that they already conducted SOP workshop way back 2015. But the manual has not been finalized and still incomplete that urged him to request for another workshop.

With the help of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) and the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB), the consortium was able to organize a two-day workshop, March 7-8 at Almont Inland Resort, Butuan City. It was participated by a total of twenty-nine (29) representatives from member-institutions of the consortium.

Unlike the previous one, the recent workshop deepens the understanding of Ms. Oliva Asendente of Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) who was present during the first workshop on how to properly craft the SOPs. According to her, it is mainly because each part of the SOPs is being reviewed one by one.

Meanwhile, Dr. Tomas encouraged the participants to finalize the SOPs so that all their efforts will not only benefit the Caraga region but in the National stake. “Maganda na magkaroon tayo ng researches na ensured and protection ng ating human participants”, she explained.

In response, Dr. Vesagas asked the participants help and commitment to gather again this April to go through a consolidated version of all the SOPs they made.
