Caraga among the finalists of PCHRD’s 3-Minute Pitch to Policymakers Competition 2021

Last 17 March 2021, the DOST – Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) conducted this year’s online 3-Minute Pitch to Policymakers Competition for Health Research in the Philippines. This is in celebration of the 39th anniversary of PCHRD, in collaboration with the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Research Utilization Committee. Since its first launch, this is the second time that the competition was held online to ensure safety protocols amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Facilitated by Dr. Harvy Joy Liwanag from the Department of Health – Health Human Resource Development Bureau (DOH –HHRDB), the event was judged by an esteemed panel, Dr. Cecilia Cristina Santos-Acuin of the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS), Dr. Eva Maria C. Cutiongco-Dela Paz of UP Manila – National Institute of Health (UPM – NIH), Ms. Arlene S. Ruiz of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Dir. Frances Rose Elgo-Mamaril of the Department of Health – Health Policy Development and Planning Bureau (DOH – HPDBP), and Dr. Peter P. San Diego of the Management Information Systems Division of Philippine Heart Center.

Upon rigorous evaluation, 12 policy pitch competitors from regional health research and development consortia nationwide were chosen to be the final presenters in the event. One of the finalists came from Caraga Region, represented by Dr. Leila A. Ombat, Chairperson of the Department of Biology in Caraga State University, specializing in Microbiology and Plant Physiology. Dr. Ombat presented her policy pitch entitled, “Philippine Traditional Healthcare and Practices: The Vanishing Treasures”. The presented pitch was from her completed PCHRD funded project on “Documentation of Philippine Traditional Knowledge on Health and Development of Traditional Knowledge Digital Library on Health of Butuanon in Butuan City”.

With thorough deliberation the judges declared the winners based on comprehension, communication style, and engagement. Third place was given to Mr. Noriel P. Calaguas of Region III for his pitch presentation, “9 Ways to Improve Gay and Bi-Men’s HIV Testing Rates”. Second place winner is the pitch title, “Antenatal Care: Every Mother’s Right for Quality Care” by Prof. Mary Joy Sande of Region V, while the 1st place winner is the pitch title, “The Web-GRID Project: Helping LGUs make better and faster Decisions during Emergencies” of Dr. Gina S. Itchon from Region X. People’s Choice Award was also given to Dr. Bella P. Magnaye of Region IV-A with her pitch title, “No Plastic, No Risk” garnering 42.9% of online audience votes during the event.
